While he was on tour with Fun, Antonoff started writing music inspired by the 1980s and '90s films of John Hughes including 'The Breakfast Club', 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and 'Uncle Buck'. The music in these films appealed to Antonoff's creative side and produced Bleachers' debut single 'I Wanna Get Better'.

In the fall of 2017, they performed on MTC Unplugged in Asbury Park. The live session was released as an album and features 11 tracks.
