The ADCC Submission World Championships is a bi-annual competition attracting the best grappling and submission competitors and is the most prestigious submission grappling tournament in the world. The acronym ADCC is short for “Abu Dhabi Combat Club,” which was the original sponsor of the event.
The event was first hosted in Abu Dhabi but now has been hosted in various countries, including Brazil, the United States, Finland and China. The event was first held annually and then in 2001, switched to being held every other year. The inaugural tournament was hosted by Abu Dhabi Sheik Tahnoun Bin Zayed Al Nahyan along with Nelson Monteiro, his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor in 1998.
The format had five weight classes as well as an open or “Absolute” division, in which all weight classes are welcome. Among the champions in the inaugural tournament was Mario Sperry, who won both the 99 KG (approximately 220 pounds) division as well as winning the Absolute division.
