Clapham and Davis had been making music together since their teenage years but struggled to find a vocalist that fits their electronic/rock fusion sound. In 2013, the pair met Joy through an online ad they’d posted on Craigslist, and after hearing her voice promptly recruited her as their new frontwoman.

The following year Cannons released their debut EP Up All Night, which established their signature style of blending popular elements from both indie rock and electronic music. They released their first full-length album Night Drive in 2017, which garnered them a dedicated following due to its sound reminiscent of 80s synthpop.

Cannons’ 2019 single “Fire for You” was a runaway success, and greatly increased the band’s exposure following its use on the 2020 dramedy show Never Have I Ever. They were soon signed to Columbia Records, and “Fire for You” became a number one hit on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.
