Born in Pinar del Rio in 1989, Rodriguez first fell in love with music while singing in his local church choir as a child. He briefly attended medical school in his native city before moving to Havana in 2010 in pursuit of a professional music career. Rodriguez found his earliest success as a producer for high-profile Cuban artists such as Liuba Maria Hevia and Raul Paz. 

In the mid-2010s, Rodriguez set off on a solo career, taking the name Cimafunk in honor of the escaped slaves in colonial-era Cuba known as cimarrons. The singer-songwriter quickly earned acclaim for his genre-bending instrumentation and a powerful singing voice reminiscent of acts like James Brown. In 2017 he released his debut album Terapia, which earned him a mention as one of Billboard’s Top Ten Latin Artists to Watch.
