As a teenager, Furstenfeld attended Houston’s prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he formed the band Last Wish. He would perform with the band for the next seven years. He also performed as a solo artist under the name 5591. Aside from his work with Blue October, Furstenfeld has also enjoyed a successful career as a songwriter. He has written songs for Canvas, Tarja Turunen and Paco Estrada, among many others. His sound has been compared to acts like Marillion, Genesis and Peter Gabriel.

A multi-talented individual, Furstenfeld also writes, paints and acts. He published the book Crazy Making in 2009, painted multiple Blue October album covers and made his film debut in Christian Sesma’s film Section Eight.
