The New York drummer, born Marc Steven Bell, began playing in the early 70s as a member of the hard rock group Dust. He recorded two albums with the band before diving more into the punk scene and joining Richard Hell and the Voidoids, with who he recorded their debut album, Blank Generation.
In 1978, Bell was asked to join the Ramones, the group he is most well-known for performing with and responsible for his renaming to Marky Ramone. He recorded five albums with the band, including 1978’s Road to Ruin and 1983’s Subterranean Jungle, before leaving the group. He rejoined the group in 1989 and remained with them, recording ten more albums and touring worldwide until their retirement in 1996. He recorded the soundtrack for and appeared in the 1979 film, Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, which starred P.J. Soles as an aspiring songwriter and superfan of the band and also featured the band themselves performing “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” and “I Want You Around”.
