The volleyball program was established in 1974 with Pam Lampley as its first head coach. The next several years were covered by short tenures before Mick Haley took the helm. He served as head coach from 1980 to 1996 and led the Longhorns to their first two national titles. Texas won the AIAW championship in 1981 and an NCAA championship in 1988 before Haley left to coach the U.S. Women’s National Team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jerritt Elliott took over in 2001 and added a third title in 2012.
Over a 38-year span from 1982 to 2019, the Longhorns were ranked among the Top 10 teams in the nation 27 times by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Only two programs -- Nebraska and Stanford -- had more top 10 appearances in that period. The Longhorns also won 11 Big 12 titles in that span. For example, the 2019 NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship was held at the Charleston Civic Center in West Virginia.
