Originally formed as a trio as high school students in 1997, the group hails from Belle Vernon, Pa., where they started out performing a blend of pop-punk and ska music. They began developing a fanbase as they performed locally and released their first album, How to Get Kicked Out of the Mall, before leaning into the pop-punk aspects of their sound and leaving behind their ska influences.
In 1999, the band released their self-titled album before teaming up with producer Billy Rossi on the 2001 EP, Major Motion Picture, and the following year’s The Rewind. Soon after, they landed a deal with Fueled by Ramen, the label responsible for acts like Paramore and Panic! At the Disco, to release the album Action as they began gaining notoriety in the scene. They saw a breakthrough with 2006’s Shep Goodman produced 37 Everywhere, reaching No. 36 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and praised for their unique use of vocal technique and harmonies. The group launched their own indie label, Modern Short Stories, where they released their viral EP, So Nice to Meet You, with pop-punk hits like “Universe” gaining millions of plays online.
