Born in Angourie, New South Wales, Cuming spent a number of years pursuing a career as a professional surfer before turning toward music. He began writing music in his late teens after encountering Jeff Buckley’s album Grace. Jeff Buckley, as well as Pearl Jam, remain his most significant influences.
Cuming first garnered attention in 2006 with his song “Let Your Spirit Fly,” which was featured on the soundtrack to the film Hoot. The artist then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a professional music career in earnest, where he was signed to Jive Records. In 2010 he released his self-titled debut album through the label, which earned him a spot opening for Maroon 5.
Cuming further established his place in the scene when in 2011 he won Australia’s Dolphin Awards for Best New Artist and Best Pop Song. The following year his song “Berlin” enjoyed charting success in Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Cuming also occasionally performs in the bands Howling and The Acid.
