Described by 'Rolling Stone' magazine as "rock's best storyteller", John Darnielle started out recording albums on a Panasonic boom box cassette player in the early 1990s before becoming an established indie-rock troubadour admired for his lo-fi, DIY spirit and his endless tales of everyday American life. Growing up in Southern California, his parents divorced when he was just five years old and a troubled relationship with his physically abusive step-father led to heavy drug addiction and endless troubles in his late teens.
Getting his life back on track, he became a psychiatric nurse and released his first cassette album 'Taboo VI: The Homecoming' through Shrimper Records in 1992. Taking the moniker The Mountain Goats from a Screamin' Jay Hawkins song, Darnielle's prolific output and wordy, obtuse narratives helped build a cult fan base and his early albums became a collector's dream for their rare eccentricity.
The acclaimed 'All Hail West Texas' became his last raw, solo album, with 'Tallahassee' marking the transition to full studio production and the addition of Franklin Bruno on guitar and Peter Hughes on bass. Signing with 4AD, more musicians joined the project on 'We Shall All Be Healed' and Darnielle's songs became more autobiographical and fully formed. 'We Shall All Be Healed', 'The Sunset Tree' and 'Heretic Pride' were all noted as significant releases, and Darnielle focused his melancholic, charming, empathetic style on his childhood obsession with professional wrestling on concept album 'Beat the Champ' in 2015. In 2017 they took on another challenge with the 'Goths' album, partly inspired by bands like The Cure, Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
