Rise to Fame
Blackpink debuted in 2016 with the release of its first album, Square One, which had only two songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” The latter climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Songs chart. Blackpink quickly garnered international attention and became the highest-charted K-pop girl group on Billboard with the hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du,” which peaked at No. 55 on the US Hot 100 list in 2018.
While the group has a limited discography, having released less than 20 tracks since 2016, this hasn’t diminished its popularity or the impact Blackpink has made in the music industry. Blackpink made history by becoming the first female K-pop group to perform at Coachella in 2019 and that same year they became the first female K-pop group to appear on a Billboard cover. Blackpink’s music video for “Kill This Love” made YouTube history at the time by amassing more than 56.7 million views in the first 24 hours of its release. Blackpink World Tour 2022 tickets are expected to be popular too as anticipation grows to see the group on the road.
Blackpink has collaborated with a variety of popular artists like Dua Lipa for her song “Kiss and Make Up,” which garnered more than 200 million streams on Spotify. Other artists the group has worked with include Selena Gomez on the track “Ice Cream” and Lady Gaga on the song “Sour Candy.”
Netflix also released BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky, a documentary that came out in 2020, detailing Blackpink’s journey and featured interviews from each of the four members.
