Players to Watch
The biggest storyline in this year’s US Open is the impending retirement of six-time champion and fan-favorite Serena Williams. The 41 year old made the announcement in a cover story for Vogue magazine indicating that she was ready to grow her family and explore life beyond tennis. Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles and ranks second all-time behind Margaret Court. She will compete in singles and women’s doubles, where she will partner with her sister Venus.
Defending champion on the women’s side is Emma Raducanu, who just defeated Williams in Cincinnati. She is ranked 11th in WTA. Iga Swiatek, Anett Kontaveit and Maria Sakkari occupy the top three spots.
On the men’s side, top-ranked Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion. Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal are No. 2 and 3.
