Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s musical, Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street, returns to Broadway with an all-star cast. For its third revival, curtains will go up on March 26 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The production will feature an all-star cast that includes Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett, respectively, under the direction of Tony Award winner Thomas Kail of Hamilton fame.
For the first time since its 1979 debut, Sweeney Todd fans will be able to experience Sondheim’s Tony-Award-winning score accompanied by Jonathan Tunick’s original 26-piece orchestra. Do not miss seeing the vengeful barber on the stage as Sweeney Todd returns to Broadway.
A Star-Studded Cast
Josh Groban made his Broadway debut in the 2016 production of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. His outstanding work as Pierre Bezukhov earned him a nomination for the 2017 Tony for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. As a Grammy Award-nominated singer with more than 25 million records sold worldwide, Groban’s vocal talents have proven to aid in his theater pursuits.
Along with his work on Broadway, Josh Groban has appeared in television shows and films like Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Muppets Most Wanted (2014), and The Good Cop (2018), an original Netflix series. Most recently, he enchanted audiences with his portrayal of the Beast on ABC’s special, Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration.
Groban’s co-star, Annaleigh Ashford is a Tony Award-winning actress and singer, best known for her role as Betty DiMello on Masters of Sex and performing on Broadway as Lauren in Kinky Boots and Essie Carmichael in You Can’t Take It With You. Before taking up the role of Mrs. Lovett, Ashford was last on Broadway with Jake Gyllenhaal in Sunday in the Park with George.
Joining Groban and Ashford in this reprisal of Sweeney Todd is Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things and Dear Evan Hansen) as Tobias, Jamie Jackson as Judge Turpin, Ruthie Ann Miles as Beggar Woman/Lucy Barker and Maria Bilbao as Johanna Barker.
Adaptations of the Classic
Sweeney Todd made its Broadway debut in March 1979 at the former Uris Theatre, now Gershwin Theater, with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury in the lead roles. The musical won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and Cariou and Lansbury were nominated for Best Actor and Actress.
In addition to the London debut at the West End Theatre in 1980, Sweeney Todd has had several revivals and has been performed at London’s West End and off-Broadway throughout the years.
In 2007, filmmaker Tim Burton re-introduced Sweeney Todd to a new generation. Starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, the film follows the demon barber of Fleet Street and his quest for revenge against Judge Turpin for destroying his family. The film was a success and received two Golden Globe Awards and three Grammy Award nominations, with critics praising Burton’s skill in bringing the musical to the silver screen and Depp’s singing chops.
