Saturday Night Live and Weekend Update
Though the two met many years before at Chicago’s improv theater iO, they rose to prominence on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Fey joined the show as a writer in 1997 and became a co-anchor of the Weekend Update segment with Jimmy Fallon in 2000. He left the show in 2004, which allowed Fey and Poehler to reunite and cement their friendship with quippy one-liners. They also made history as the first all-female Weekend Update team.
Fey left the show after the 2005-06 season to develop her hit show 30 Rock, which is loosely based on her experiences at the famed NBC Universal building that sits at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. Poehler stayed on SNL through the end of 2008 and hosted the segment with Seth Meyers.
Solo Projects and Guest Appearances
Fey made her film debut as a writer and co-star in Mean Girls in 2004. Poehler was also in the film along with fellow SNL alums Tim Meadows and Ana Gasteyer. Fey’s 30 Rock ran from 2006 to 2013 and collected 16 Primetime Emmy Awards in addition to several other accolades. In 2008, Fey swept the major television awards winning the Emmy, Screen Actors Guild, and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. After 30 Rock ended, Fey created and produced Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Poehler starred in the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation after leaving SNL. She won a Golden Globe in 2014 for her work on the show while hosting the awards with Fey. The duo was tapped to host in 2013, 2014 and 2015 as well as 2021. Since Parks and Recreation, Poehler has appeared in additional NBC programming and several films including Baby Mama (2008) and Sisters (2015) with Fey, as well as Horton Hears a Who!, and Inside Out. She made her directorial debut with Netflix’s Wine Country (2019) and is the executive producer of the platform’s Emmy-nominated drama Russian Doll. Poehler also started her own production company called Paper Kite Productions.
