The artist released his debut mixtape The Mickstape in 2012, then joined the hip hop collective the Free Nationals. Jenkins rose to fame the following year when he released his mixtape Trees & Truths, which garnered universal praise for its jazz instrumentals and uniquely poetic lyrics. Soon high-profile artists like Timbaland, Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa had publicly endorsed the release. Jenkins’ 2014 project The Water(s) would cement his place as one of the most talented new artists in the genre.
