Born in 1947 in Worcester, Mass., John Adams grew up surrounded by music and spent his youth listening to jazz, Broadway musicals, classical and rock. His father taught him to play the clarinet and at the age of ten, Adams started composing his own music. He attended Harvard University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and a Master of Arts in 1971 studying composition. During the day, he conducted the Bach Society Orchestra and by night, he played The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. His display of creativity made Adams the first Harvard student allowed to write a musical composition, The Electric Wake, for his senior thesis.
Adams moved to teach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In the years following, Adams composed more operas and symphonies, most of which focus on current events of the country and world. His piece On the Transmigration of Souls was a memorial work done in honor of the September 11, 2001, victims. It received the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Music and the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition.
