The great and powerful monster Mishibizhiw set fire to the Tar Sands of Turtle Island where Ajijaak and her family lived. And now, alone, she must make her first migration to the Gulf Coast from Wood Buffalo, Canada. Ajijaak was given, by her parents, a medicine bundle to aid in her travels. Along the way she encounters and befriends animals like turtles, coyotes, buffalo, and deer. She also learns from the Ho-Chunk, Lakota, Cherokee, and Ojibwe the dances, prayers, and songs that give her strength and connect her to Earth. It is with these connections and these songs that Ajijaak can return Mishibizhiw to its slumber and restore the peace to Turtle Island.
