Altın Gün has been bringing refreshing new interpretations to the world of '70s Turkish psychedelic, funk and rock sounds since their inception in the 2010s. The bassist, Jasper Verhulst, came to the idea of adding a modern twist to some bygone sounds after finding some records while in Turkey that featured stars of the Turkish psychedelic scene. Upon returning to his home in Amsterdam, he worked with his fellow musicians Ben Rider and Nic Mauskovic, a guitarist and drummer respectively, to start finding the sound they wanted. To add some authenticity to their sound and understand the source material, they added Turkish musicians Merve Dasdemir, Erdinç Ecevit, and Gino Groeneveld. Dasdemir on vocals and keyboard, Ecevit on electric saz, vocals, and keys, and Groeneveld provided the percussion. Once they developed their sound, they began playing live shows in Amsterdam to a welcoming Dutch and Holland-based Turkish fanbase. Their first single, “Goca Dünya”, was released in 2017, and in the next year their debut album, On, was released. They caught a break when a Seattle-based radio station, KEXP, offered to feature them on their streaming website. Their session online gave them enough notoriety to open for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's Gizzfest, and over the course of the year 2019, they acquired a deal with ATO Records, a new drummer, Daniel Smienk, released an LP, Gece, which contained one original composition along with reimagined traditional Turkish songs, and they embarked on their first U.S. tour. To top it all off, Gece was nominated in the Best World Music Album category during the Grammy Awards.

In 2019, the band took on their European Tour where they stopped at the Jazz Café in London, the Café de la Danse in Paris, and Gretchen in Berlin. When they were in the U.S., they stopped at a collection of smaller venues like the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles and the Turf Club in St. Paul, Minnesota. They were joined by Nilüfer Yanya and Thunderbolt Pagoda respectively at each of those shows. Given their globe-trotting habits, it’s likely they could visit any one of those countries or cities again.
