Ave Maria University is a Catholic school founded in 1998 by Tom Monaghan. Originally based out of Ypsilanti, Mich., under the name Ave Maria College, the school became a university in 2003. 

The team plays in the National Association of Intercollegiate Sports as members of the Sun Conference. A new development for Ave Maria University came about when the five-year head football coach of The Gyrenes, Joe Patterson, was promoted to the position of athletic director in May of 2020.
