Melissa Etheridge is a musician, singer-songwriter and activist from Kansas. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1988, was a runaway success on the Billboard 200 and earned Etheridge a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance. Her 1993 album Yes I Am went multi-platinum, reaching the very top of the Billboard 200. The album’s lead single “Ain’t It Heavy” won Etheridge the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance.
The artist is known for her intimate lyrics, smoky vocals and unique combination of pop and folk-rock styles. In the late 2000s, she won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “I Need to Wake Up,” which was used in the groundbreaking docudrama An Inconvenient Truth.
