Watch the groundbreaking Tony Award performance with Company: A Musical Comedy tickets. The original production was nominated for a record-setting 14 Tony Awards, and won six!
In the 1970s, George Furth wrote eleven one-act plays. Anthony Perkins, who was interested in directing, asked Stephen Sondheim to read the material. It debuted in Boston to mixed reviews. Company was originally supposed to be called "Threes". The story of the musical centers around Robert, who is newly married and living in New York City during the 1970s. It deals with themes such as marriage, infidelity, relationships between men and women, divorce, aging and death. Stephen Sondheim said he wanted to write a piece about how difficult people find long-term relationships in the contemporary world. Sondheim quotes, "Broadway theater has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with Company talking about how we're going to bring it right back in their faces."
This revival is a gorgeous tribute to the great Broadway director, Harold Prince, it's no wonder Company: A Musical Comedy tickets have been selling out for decades. Company features an unusual series of interconnected vignettes that reveal the intersecting lives and relationships of the characters--no matter how unconventional, or even disturbing, they may be. With Broadway greats Patti LuPone and Katrina Lenk reprising their roles as Olivier and the gender-swapping Bobbi, this is one classic for the ages. It is profoundly refreshing and some of the most famously witty one-liners that makes this musical truly brilliant.
