Born in Brooklyn in 1975, Maroulis grew a love for music as a boy. While in middle school he learned to play the trumpet, going on to sing in a number of garage rock bands as a teenager. Maroulis then studied musical theatre at the Boston Conservatory, appearing in a number of off-Broadway roles.
In 2004 Maroulis auditioned for American Idol, one of the first contestants to do so with a rock song. He would make it to the finals, finishing in the American Idol top ten. Shortly afterward he released his debut album with his band Pray for the Soul of Betty and was invited by Brian May to record for the album Killer Queen: A Tribute to Queen.
By the late 2000s, Maroulis had set off on his solo career, with his 2007 album Constantine reaching the Billboard 200. In 2009 he earned a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Rock of Ages.
