Born in Sicily, he moved to Milan in 1967 and began writing music and performing. Among his many recordings, the albums 'Fetus' (1972), 'Pollution' (1972), 'Clic' (1974), 'Juke Box' (1978) and 'Franco Battiato' (1977) are the most highly acclaimed. His song 'I Trend di Tozeur' with Saro Cosentinio and Giusti Pio, which he performed with Alice, was the Italian entry in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest and he later released a solo version. He continued to record into the 21st century with his latest release 'Live in Roma' in 2016.
He has scored several features, documentaries and short films starting in 1987 with Egidio Eronico's 'A Proposition di Roma' and including Elisabetta Sgarbi's 'Il Paint Della Statua' (2007) and 'Love Stories' (2013). He directed his first movie 'Lost Love' in 2003 and his other titles include 'Musikanten' (2006) and 'Nothing Is As It Seems' (2007).
