Originally hailing from Jacksonville, FL, the seeds for what would become JJ Grey & Mofro were planted when John Higginbotham, a.k.a. JJ Grey and Daryl Hance signed a record deal together under the name Mofro Magic. In 2001 after Mofro Magic’s record deal dissolved, Grey and Hance signed a deal with Fog City Records and officially changed the band name to Mofro. “JJ Grey and Mofro” only came after Grey’s grandmother asked him if he was ashamed to use his name.

The name Mofro was chosen by JJ Grey because he thought it sounded southern, and much of the band’s inspiration was drawn from its roots in Florida. The band’s first label release, Blackwater, even featured “Florida” as a song title. Throughout their career, JJ Grey & Mofro have written about day-to-day life and experience in the south, and in Florida specifically. As of 2020, JJ Grey & Mofro have released a total of nine studio albums.
