Siddhartha is a four-piece rock band from Michigan known for their classic garage rock sound in the vein of acts like The Gories, MC5 and The Stooges. Though the group has not found significant mainstream success, they retain a devoted cult following in underground music circles.
The members of Siddhartha are Max Guirand, Jesse Olswang, Eric Alonzo and Marlon Hauser. The band was founded by Hauser in Detroit in 2003 with a vision of playing the traditional garage and grunge rock made popular in the '90s by groups like Sonic Youth and Radiohead. Siddhartha attracted their first serious attention in 2007 when their songs appeared on the successful compilation album Through the Wilderness. After a move to San Francisco the following year, the band was signed to the Manimal Vinyl record label.
In 2012 Siddhartha released their album If It Die, which despite limited commercial success earned widespread critical praise from critics. If It Die appeared on several publications’ Top Ten lists and was widely credited with establishing the dashiki-shoegaze genre.
