Born in New Orleans in 1960, Hamm learned to play bass and piano while playing in his high school’s stage band. He went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he met guitarist Steve Vai. Hamm would contribute heavily to Vai’s debut solo album Flex-Able in 1984.
Hamm has since toured heavily alongside a slew of high-profile acts like Frank Gambale and Joe Satriani. His work with Satriani, in particular, achieved national attention, and Hamm is now regarded as one of the nation’s leading jazz bassists. In 1988 Ham released his debut solo album Radio Free Albemuth. Radio Free Albemuth earned rave reviews from critics for its unique fusion of jazz, country and classical styles.
Hamm is also widely known for his unorthodox playing style. He incorporates a variety of slapping, popping and two-handed tapping techniques such that his bass guitar is able to mimic the sounds of several other instruments.
