The main characters Jojo, Sonja, Queen and Fleetwood all dream of a better life while desperately doing what they must to survive on the streets.
Gasman came up with the idea for the musical after witnessing an arrest on 42nd Street, deciding to write a play that gives humanity to those affected by the often overlooked seediness of Times Square.
The Life premiered off-Broadway at the Westbeth Theatre in 1990 and starred Lillias White and Chuck Cooper. Audiences quickly responded to the musical’s compelling characters and unusual subject matter, and by 1997 The Life had moved to Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The Broadway production won two Tony Awards, three Drama Desk Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards.
