Titus Burgess (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Guys and Dolls) has created a new musical based that follows a preacher named Henry and his wife, Julia, as they try to keep their congregation in Harlem afloat while dealing with the increased gentrification of their neighborhood. After praying fervently, Reverend Henry receives assistance from an angel sent by God.  However, Henry must decide whether this angel is truly a blessing or a figure that will cause more issues while Julia learns to make her voice heard and help her community. The Preacher’s Wife is a touching musical that celebrates faith and family along with making a point that a church is more than just a building but is actually the people that make up the congregation. 

The musical makes its world premiere in May 2024 at the Coca-Cola Stage at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta, Ga. Burgess composed the music and lyrics for the musical, while Michael Arden and Tinashe Kajese-Bolden directed the production. The story is adapted from Robert Nathan’s book “The Bishop’s Wife” and the movies, The Bishop’s Wife (1947) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996), which starred Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington.
