The challenge is a two day, 36-hole event where golfers compete to earn the Willie Park trophy, named in honor of British Open champions Willie Park Sr. and Willie Park Jr. The professional players in the tournament are all major championship or Players Championship winners while the second member of the team is a non-touring family member. 

Raymond Floyd and his son, Raymond Floyd Jr. won the first three Father/Son Challenges before Bob and David Charles won the Park Trophy in 1998. Justin Thomas became the first tour pro to win the event while playing with his father, Mike Thomas, when the duo won the event in 2020. Fuzzy Zoeller was the first tour pro to play with his daughter when they competed in the 2005 event.

The event has traditionally been played in Florida with past courses including Vero Beach, Champions Gate and the Ritz-Carlton. PNC Championship tickets can go quickly when famous players like Tiger Woods or Davis Love III play with their sons and daughters.
