The track opened in 1956, but races on public roads had previously been held in the town of Watkins Glen under SCCA sanctioning since 1948. The original Grand Prix layout of the road course was altered in 1971 and the track now has two unique layouts. The full course utilizes a section of the track known as “The Boot” while the short course is used by NASCAR, utilizing what is called the “Inner Loop” and skipping “The Boot” section of the track.

Summer Jam was held at the track in 1973 with an all-star lineup including The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead and The Band in front of an estimated 600,000 fans.
