Go back to the 1960s with Hairspray tickets. The movie Hairspray is set in a fictional 1962 Baltimore, Maryland.  The lead in the movie is the “pleasantly plump” teenager Tracy Turnblad, who wants to be a star on a local TV show and fights racial segregation. 

The movie was only modestly successful in theatres, grossing $8 million, though it did receive some critical acclaim. However, thanks to home rentals, it soon became a cult favorite and in 2002, the film was adapted into a movie of the same name.

The original Broadway production debuted at the Neil Simon Theater on August 15, 2002. The play received 13 Tony Award nominations and won 8, including best musical, book, score and direction awards. The original production ran for more than six years, closing on Jan 4, 2009, after 2,642 performances.

Hairspray also opened in Australia in 2010 at the Princess Theater in Melbourne. It achieved great critical success. It moved to Sydney on June 11, 2011, where it was performed at the Lyric Theater at the Star Casino until September 25. Other runs include a revival in London and tours in the United States, the first of which was in 2003.
