Originally known as Andrew Jackson Jihad, the band got started when frontman Bonnette was still just a teenager, as he and Gallaty focused on creating lyrically driven music while leaning heavily on acoustic instrumentation. They would soon garner an increasingly vibrant following, as audiences worldwide became drawn to their nuanced songwriting which would explore several compelling themes such as humanity, politics and religion. Quickly standing out in the crowded pop-rock music scene, their folk-punk production would give them a distinguished edge as AJJ tickets became high in demand.

Although Bonnette and Gallaty have remained the core staples of the band since the beginning, their lineup has featured an array of elite members over the years, contributing to their constantly evolving sound. However, with the release of Christmas Island in 2014, their genre became less obvious, displaying an impressive instrumental range by adding on piano, strings and organ. It was the group's first departure from their original sound, becoming more polished, varied and slightly veering towards the experimental.
