In 1989, Bryne released his first solo album, Rei Momo, which was inspired by the song styles of Afro-Hispanic and Brazilian. Byrne continued to experiment with different music styles in his follow up albums Un-Oh, Feelings, Look into the Eyeball and Grown Backwards. He also collaborated with singer St. Vincent in 2012 for the album, Love This Giant.
In 2018, Byrne released American Utopia, which marked his first solo album in 14 years. Bryne adapted American Utopia into a stage performance in 2019, which premiered at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre. A film version of the stage show was released on HBO in 2020.
Aside from his prolific recording career, Bryne is also known for his theater and film work. In 1986, Byrne released the film True Stories, which he wrote, starred and directed.
