They began in 1970 in the backwoods town Paw Paw, West Virginia. The group gained notoriety in 1973 after Van Morrison mentioned their songs in an issue of Rolling Stone. Willie Nelson invited the band to record and perform in Austin in 1974. They released a self-titled album after the move and saw their cover of Louis Jordan’s “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” become their first charted single.

The West Virginians dropped their best-known song “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read” in 1975. The track reached the top ten on the Billboard charts. Asleep At The Wheel was named the Best Country Western Band by Rolling Stone just a year after its release.

The band continued to rack up awards, winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance on six occasions. The group was nominated for five awards in 1999, winning Best Country Instrumental Performance for “Bob’s Breakdowns.”
