The original members include lead guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser, vocalist Eric Bloom, keyboardist Allen Lanier, bassist Joe Bouchard and drummer Albert Bouchard. Roeser and Bloom are still current members along with bassist Danny Miranda, drummer Jules Radino and keyboardist Richie Castellano. When the band first formed, their name was Soft White Underbelly. In 1971, they changed the name to Blue Oyster Cult, which was taken from a poem written by their manager, Sandy Pearlman. Under their new name, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1972. It featured the single “Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll,” which became known as one of their most famous songs and a staple at concerts. Their fourth studio album, Agents of Fortune, was released in 1976 and was more successful than their previous ones. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. It contained one of their most noteworthy singles, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper.” This was their highest charting song, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also listed on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 songs of all time. You may have seen it in the 2000 Saturday Night Live skit “More Cowbell,” featuring Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken.

In 2012, the band celebrated their 40th anniversary with a special event in New York. The same year, they also released a 17-disc boxed set, The Complete Columbia Albums Collection. It contained eight of their albums, along with multiple demos and radio broadcasts. Their fourteenth studio album The Symbol Remains was set to be released in 2020.
