Bonnie Lynn Raitt born November 8, 1949, is an American blues singer, guitarist, songwriter, and activist. Raitt was born in Burbank California, the daughter of the Broadway musical star John Raitt and Majorie Haydock a successful pianist. Bonnie’s family is of Scottish descent, her ancestors constructed Rait Castle and she was raised in the Quaker tradition. During her second year of attending Radcliffe College, majoring in Social Relations and African studies Raitt became friends with blues promoter Dick Waterman and left school to move to Philadelphia, an opportunity Raitt says changed everything.
In 1971 she played with her brother David on stand up bass with Mississippi Fred McDowell at the Philly Folk Festival as well as opening for John Hammond at the Gaslight Cafe in New York where she was seen by a reporter from Newsweek, who spread the word about her performance which led to interest from major record companies paying attention and watching her shows. Soon after she accepted an offer and signed with Warner Bros. and released her self titled debut album, Bonnie Raitt in 1971.
Raitt released Takin’ My Time was met with a warm welcome just as her debut but the good reviews were not matched with album sales. Raitt did start to gain more coverage from the press however with being featured as a cover story for Rolling Stone. Raitt in the mid-1970s began to experiment with different styles and producers to make her music more mainstream. Over the years Raitt has received many awards including 27 Grammy nominations with 11 wins for Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and Best American Album among others. Raitt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Guitar Museum. Other notable works by Bonnie Raitt include Longing in Their Hearts, Souls Alike and Dig in Deep.
