Breakwater is an eight-piece funk band from Pennsylvania known primarily for their 1980 hit “Release the Beast.” The members are Kae Williams Jr., John Braddock, Greg Scott, Vince Garnell, Steve Green, Lincoln Gilmore, James Jones and Gene Robinson.

Breakwater came together in Philadelphia in 1971, and by 1978 had been signed to Arista Records. They released their eponymous debut album through the label later that year, finding success with the song “You Know I Love You.” “You Know I Love You,” written by Scott, charted on the Billboard Top Singles, and was praised by critics for its authentic sound and intelligent songwriting. Breakwater became known for their slow jam style that nevertheless incorporates elements from rock and disco. They have been compared to artists like Earth, Wind & Fire and Con Funk Shun.

Breakwater found the most success, however, in their 1980 album Splashdown. Splashdown spent eight weeks within the top fifty on the Billboard charts and has been hailed by publications like the Broward Palm Beach New Times as a funk music masterpiece.
