The University of Maine has had a hockey program since 1977 when it was known as the University of Maine at Orono.  The Harold Afford Sports Arena, the Afford Arena for short, was created at the same time.  The first coach of the Black Bears was Jason Semler.

The team competed in the East Coast Athletic Conference in Division II play until 1979, when the conference, including the University of Maine, became Division I. The team joined the Hockey East Conference in 1984. The Hockey East is the only conference in the NCAA that only competes in hockey.

They have qualified for the NCAA Tournament more than 15 times and been in the Frozen Four multiple times along with several conference tournaments and regular season
