While the event is commonly referred to as the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, the official name is the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show. Since 1896, the event has been held annually in Fort Worth, Texas. Only once has the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo been forced to take a hiatus. In 1943, the event was unable to be held due to a lack of facilities in Fort Worth. All of the factories and means of transportation were dedicated to the war effort. The show moved to the Will Rogers Memorial Center in 1944. Fans can still purchase Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo tickets at the Will Rogers today.
Fort Worth has been known as “Cowtown” since the time after the Civil War. Many cowboys would stop through the city for supplies on their way to the Chisholm Trail. Massive stockyards began to accumulate more and more cattle and ranchers thought of a way to market their stock. The very first Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo was born out of these efforts. Due to the success of the inaugural show, ranchers decided to continue hosting the event.
In 1917, local newspaper editor Ray McKinley had the idea to incorporate cowboy and cowgirl competitions into the successful stock show. The committee decided on various rodeo contests such as bronc riding and junior steer riding. Many consider the 1918 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo to be the world’s first indoor rodeo.
The modern event is held over 23 days between mid-January and early February. Thirty-six professional rodeo performances and over 22,000 head of livestock are on display each year.
