After singing with The Gaither Trio, Gaither brought together fellow singers Gary McSpadden, Steve Green and Lee Young to create a new sound in the Christian music industry. As the group evolved, they began to return to Gaither’s southern gospel roots, while also embracing various styles and genres. They also honored their roots by touring with some of the top names of the 20th century's southern gospel, including The Happy Goodmans, Jake Hess and J.D. Sumner. Notable GVB alumni include baritone/comedian Mark Lowry, accomplished tenor David Phelps and former Imperials singer Larnelle Harris.

In their videos and concerts, the GVB has performed many of Bill Gaither’s songs, including “He Touched Me,” “Because He Lives,” and “It is Finished.” Gaither has been with the group since its inception, singing baritone and bass for the group. In 1983, Gaither was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame.
