Gurney and premiered at the New York City Public Library in 1988, with the author performing the part of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Holland Taylor portraying Melissa Gardner. The play opened off-Broadway at the Promenade Theatre on March 27, 1989, at first starring Kathleen Turner and John Rubinstein and directed by John Tillinger, running for 64 showings, with the cast constantly changing. Actors who appeared in the play include Christopher Reeve, Joan Van Ark, Christopher Walken and William Hurt.
