His mother and father are a violinist and pianist respectively, and with their encouragement, Makela studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy under Jorma Panula. Makela had previously found a love for conducting while singing in the Finnish National Opera as a boy. He became a featured cellist with numerous high-profile groups in Finland including the Lahti Symphony Orchestra.

In 2017 Makela debuted as a guest conductor for the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and his performance was impressive enough to earn him a post as the orchestra’s principal guest conductor. Makela remains the youngest person to receive a titled conducting position with the group.

The following year he became the artistic director for the Turku Music Festival and won second place in the Turku National Cello Competition. Makela then made an appearance conducting the Oslo Philharmonic in Norway, where his skill again earned him a titled post. He was made the Oslo Philharmonic’s chief conductor beginning in 2020, his first such position. Makela was also made the music director for the esteemed Orchestre de Paris the same year.
