Mase was born Mason Durell Betha as a fraternal twin in 1975. In 1982, his mom moved the family from Jacksonville to Harlem, NY. He became a basketball star at Manhattan Center High School and met the rapper who was later known as Cam’ron. After attending college at SUNY Purchase, Mase realized his passion was writing music. He teamed up with Cam’ron to rap together as Murda Mase and Killa Cam. He soon met Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs at a Biggie Smalls concert and was immediately signed to Bad Boy Records. He was soon featured on the No.1 Billboard hit “Mo Money, Mo Problems.” He released his debut album titled Harlem World in 1998, which went 4x platinum. His second album, Double Up, was released the following year and hit the Billboard charts. Mase then took a hiatus from music to become an ordained minister.
