Home games are played at Lawson Arena, located on campus in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The arena is a single-level horseshoe-style arena that seats 3,667 and opened in 1974. Lawson Arena is also home to the WMU ice hockey club team and the WMU synchronized skating club team.
Hockey started at WMU in 1973. The Broncos joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, or CCHA, in time for the 1975-1976 season. While in the CCHA, WMU won the 1986 CCHA playoff tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time under then-coach Bill Neal. The team joined the NCHC in 2013.

There have been many former Broncos who have gone on to the NHL, including Jamal Meyers, who played in the NFL from 1996 to 2013. In his tenure in the league, he played for the Chicago Blackhawks and helped win the Stanley Cup. He also played for the St. Louis Blues, the Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks. He is in the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame.
Other players who were NHL stars from WMU include Bernie Saunders and Glenn Healy. Glenn Healy won a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers.
