Originally known as the Portland Symphony Society, the Oregon Symphony was founded in 1896 and is the sixth oldest orchestra in the United States. The first concert by the orchestra was performed on October 30, 1896. It was conducted by W.H. Kinross and featured pieces such as Joseph Haydn’s Surprise Symphony. In 1967, the symphony was officially renamed the Oregon Symphony Society, which was eventually shortened to Oregon Symphony.

Over the years, the symphony has continuously performed pieces by some of history’s most well-known composers, such as Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Chopin. Motown hitmaker Smokey Robinson may perform with the symphony for a Valentine’s Day event, and the orchestra may host a concert featuring artists as opposed to Leslie Odom, Jr. and Weird Al Yankovic. With as keen an eye for the present as it has one for classical tradition, it’s no wonder that the Oregon Symphony has been a mainstay in Portland culture for over a hundred years.
