The mambo band Orquestra Akokan is dedicated to recreating the big band mambo sound of the late 1940s and early 1950s. “Akokan” is a Yoruba word that in Cuba means “from the heart.” The group was created by the trio of vocalist Jose “Pepito” Gomez, pianist, composer and arranger Michael Eckroth and producer Jacob Plasse. 

Plasse, who has won a Latin Grammy in addition to being Grammy-nominated in the United States worked with Eckroth to create the group’s signature sound. Eckroth wrote his doctoral dissertation on Cuban piano solos. He also reached out to Jose Gomez, who as a well-known vocalist has worked with Latin groups such as Maravilla de Florida, Company Segundo and Pupy y Los Que Son Son, a famous timba ensemble.

The group’s debut album, released in 2018 was the self-titled Orquestra Akokan,  which became an all-star affair as some of the best musicians that Cuba had to offer got involved with the project, which was recorded at the legendary Areito Estudio Ciento Uno, which was the studio for virtually every major Cuban musician since the 1940s when it was built for the Panart record label.

The original aim of the group was just to create an album, but the group has since performed live in Europe and South America, as well as performing in the United States in venues such as the Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. The orchestra has also performed at the San Francisco Jazz Center.
