Kershaw went through two marriages and a succession of day jobs and as he toured with Louisiana club bands in hopes of gaining fame and spotlight. Unfortunately, Kershaw developed major problems with drugs and alcohol and quit everything cold-turkey, including his music, in 1988. It was not until a friend convinced Kershaw to submit a demo tape to Mercury Records in 1990 that Kershaw finally landed the record-deal he had spent his entire life pursuing.

Kershaw’s 1991 debut album with Mercury Records ‘Don’t Go Near the Water’, went platinum with breakout hit singles such as “Cadillac Style” and “Anywhere but Here”. Kershaw’s southern honky-tonk tracks and ballads lifted him to commercial success with the release of his second straight platinum album, ‘Haunted Heart’. Building on the success of his Cajun rock hits, Kershaw began to shift toward a more radio-friendly contemporary country style with hits such as “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful” and “Meant to Be”.
