The team has represented San Diego since 2009. Home games are played at Ron Newman Field at Pechanga Arena, which was home to the MISL Sockers, and holds 12,920 spectators.

The Sockers originally were formed as the Baltimore Comets in 1974. In 1976, the team moved to California and became the San Diego Jaws.  The team moved for one year to Las Vegas in 1977 and was renamed the Las Vegas Quicksilvers. In 1978, the team again moved back to California as the San Diego Sockers.

The original San Diego Sockers were two-time champions of the North American Soccer League, or NASL. When the NASL folded, the team moved to the Major Indoor Soccer League and proceeded to win eight championships in that league in the 1980s and early 1990s. After the team folded in 1996, a new San Diego Sockers team briefly existed in the early 2000s.

The team also has the distinction of having the longest winning streak in US Professional Soccer history, winning 48 games in a row from December 29, 2010, to January 27, 2013.
