Headquartered in Alton, Ill., the River Dragons play their home games out of the city’s Lloyd Hopkins Field–the former home of the Central Illinois Collegiate League’s Bluff City Bombers. They are owned by Steve Marso and managed by Darrell Handelsman, and their team colors are red, white and green.

The Alton River Dragons were founded in 2020 marking the first time that baseball returned to the city since the 1917 Alton Blues played within the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League. The name “River Dragons” was chosen later that year through a fan voting contest. Though owner Steve Marso had previous experience with collegiate summer baseball franchises, the team struggled to find a long-term manager until the hiring of Handelsman in 2021.
