Harling originally wrote the play as a way to honor the memory of his sister, who died from diabetes. Steel Magnolias began as a short story to help Harling’s nephew understand his now-absent mother.

Harling became consumed by the project, and in less than two weeks had adapted the short story to the play known widely today. One of the hallmarks of the piece is the way in which the main characters use humor to cope with the dark and complex realities of age, loss and changing relationships. Though male characters are alluded to throughout, the audience only ever sees the women and hears their interpretations of the world around them. Steel Magnolias premiered off-Broadway in 1987 at the WPA Theatre. Both its wit and seriousness captivated audiences, and the play’s success saw it move to Broadway in 2005. Performances of Steel Magnolias have often involved actors and actresses that went on to become mainstream film stars, including such names as Nicole Kidman. In 1989 it was released as a feature film with a screenplay written by Harling himself.
